1. What are your hours and location?
Herbert’s is located at 7528 A Pershing Blvd, just off of Hwy 50 in Kenosha. In January of 2011 we moved from the south end of the Plaza to the north end, next to the UPS Store. Our regular hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10am-8pm. Tuesday and Saturday 10am-5:30pm. Closed Sunday. Special extended holiday hours apply. Click here for map.

2. Do you do custom designs?
Yes. The custom design process often begins by sharing images of your ideas. We like to get to know your likes (and dislikes) when it comes to different styles, looks, scale, etc. A very important factor in design that can be overlooked is functionality. Will this jewelry likely be worn every day? Another nice thing about custom designing jewelry is that you have control over the cost factors and can tweak elements to modify cost, as every item is hand-picked to create the piece. Herbert’s Jewelers is quite experienced in traditional wax casting techniques, but sometimes a hybrid design is the best option – starting with something like an existing casting from one or our vendors and modifying it to your specifications. When custom designing jewelry your possibilities are endless. We are also happy to fulfill special orders. Many items are in the store within a day or two.

3. Do you do appraisals?
Appraisals are included with the purchase of jewelry from our store, as are free updates upon request. We also do appraisals by appointment starting at $75.00. This includes documentation, digital and printed photos and free updates in the future. Appraisals can be done for replacement value (insurance) and fair-market value (re-sale).

4. What are your accepted methods of payment and payment plans?
We accept all major credit cards, checks and cash. We also have a no-interest layaway plan which requires a monthly payment and is usually paid off in about 6 months. With this option, the merchandise stays in the store until it is paid in full. If you need it right away, we also offer financing. Applications are available in the store and approval is usually the same day.

5. Do you buy gold and diamonds?
Herbert’s will take in precious metals and some stones for store credit, used as a form of payment. We offer credit towards new merchandise, custom work, special orders and repairs. We do not pay out cash in order to protect you, a member of our community, and to maintain our integrity as a local business. We assess the value of your trade-in based on the current market for precious metals.

6. What is your diamond trade-in policy?
Herbert’s offers a unique diamond trade up program. We offer this on our center stone diamonds, diamond stud earrings and diamond solitaire pendants. If the diamond is purchased from Herbert’s, we give you what you paid for the stone towards an upgrade and ask that you spend only $500 more than the credit. This offer stands on stones purchased since our opening in 1938. If there are no records of purchase or the stone was purchased elsewhere, we will assess the value of the stone based on the current market using the GIA grading system. Herbert’s reserves the right to disqualify any stone that is damaged, treated, clarity enhanced or not of similar quality to the merchandise we carry.

7. Do you repair jewelry?
Yes! We have a full service repair department. We repair gold, silver, platinum, watches and clocks. We repair jewelry that was not purchased at our store and give free estimates on all repairs. We also restring pearls and beads and repair costume jewelry. In almost all cases, our repairs are done locally we do not send them out.

8. How long does a repair take?
Estimates take 2-4 days, some quick repairs can be done while you wait in the store. More complex repairs are given to the goldsmith and can take 2-4 weeks.

9. How much does it cost to size a ring?
This question can’t be answered without the ring. We measure the shank (band of the ring) to see how thick and wide it is, then determine how many sizes up or down it needs to go, if it has stones that will need to be tightened, and if the rhodium will need to be redone.

10. How will I know my diamonds are the same ones I dropped off for repair?
Some people are concerned about leaving their jewelry. Even though our repairs are done locally and not sent out, we still want you to feel comfortable when dropping off your most treasured possessions. After being in business for over 74 years, we have become one of the most trusted jewelers in Kenosha. We believe in educating our customers so we always show you your stones under the microscope, and write down notations so you can identify your stones when you pick them up.

11. Do you clean and check jewelry?
Herbert’s is happy to clean and check your jewelry while you wait, even if you purchased the item elsewhere. We offer this service at no charge.

12. Do you offer engraving?
We engrave items purchased at our store. Many companies we order from also offer engraving for special orders. We do not engrave items from outside sources due to the irreplaceable nature of most of these items.

13. Do you change watch batteries and adjust watch bands?
We change/adjust them while you wait at the repair counter. It usually takes just a few minutes. Many local stores send people to use for this service.

14. What is rhodium?
Rhodium is a member of the platinum family. It is used to plate white metals to make them whiter. White gold and silver are often plated with rhodium.
